Whiting Community School Hosted Another Successful Book Fair!
The Whiting Community School hosted a Book Fair from October 24th through October 26th. Funds raised helped purchase books for the Whiting School elementary and secondary libraries as well as the classroom libraries. Families, faculty, staff, students and the community were all involved and participated in many ways through volunteering, donations, purchasing books, or just encouraging the love of reading.
The school partnered with the women’s fellowship group from the Whiting First Congregational Church to raise funds to replace books in schools affected by the recent hurricanes. Together, just over $1000.00 was raised for All For Books. Scholastic Books will match these donations by providing books to these same schools through the Kids in Need Foundation.
The Whiting Education Foundation provided funds for every student to purchase a book. Their generosity was greatly appreciated. Each child selected a book and a sticker was affixed to the inside front cover denoting it as a gift from the Whiting Education Foundation.
Total sales of books, including funds provided by the Whiting Education Foundation were just short of $4,800.00, and teachers were able to select $1,260.00 worth of books for their classroom libraries.
Lunch with a Loved One was held on Wednesday, October 25th, with students in grades PK-6 inviting a loved one to pack their own lunch and share it with them in the lunchroom. They also had the opportunity to shop at the book fair during their visit.
Classroom teachers sparked enthusiasm and were competing for a book prize by decorating their classroom door with a reading theme. Voting by the judges resulted in a tie. Both Mr. West, 4th grade teacher, and Mrs. Boynton, 1st grade teacher were awarded a book prize.
Students who won a free book from the book fair included: Kylie Atmore, Bradley Stoeklen, Blair Newton, Greyson Woodward, Cayden Roberts, Liam Stensgard, David Jorgensen, Hannah Neubaum and Brenyn Teel. Students who won a free poster from the book fair were: Sophie Newlon, ShayLynn Kamrath, Zane Bergman, Kelsey Vanden Bosch, Emilie Atmore, Abbie Hagestrom, Syncerity Ruble, Noah Hagestrom and Avery Turner, Koltyn Anderson, Charlotte Stensgard, Samantha Jorgenson, and Lance Nichols.
WHS National Honor Society plants Memorial
Dr. Garred Sr. served on the Whiting School Board for 30 years. The Whiting High School National Honor Society wanted to honor his memory by planting this tree and hanging this plaque in the courtyard of the Whiting Community School. Dr. Garred Sr. worked a lifetime caring for the residents and students of Whiting through his medical practice and his time as a board of education member. We appreciate his many contributions over the years.
“Thank you to Dr. John Garred Sr. and his family for a lifetime of caring for our children and their education.”
