Al Laboranti • Principal
Born and raised in Massachusetts (go Red Sox), Al Laboranti has been an administrator for 15 years. Prior to that, he was a high school business teacher for 12 years. Besides teaching and being a principal, Mr. Laboranti has coached high school football, basketball and baseball for 20 years.
Mr. Laboranti earned his undergraduate degree in Business Management and a Master's degree in School Administration. He also holds an advanced graduate degree in Educational Leadership.
Mr. Laboranti enjoys traveling and golfing with his wife, Amy, who is an Iowa native.

Jennifer Bakke • Preschool
Jenni Bakke is the preschool teacher at Whiting. Jenni grew up in Moville, Iowa and now lives in Sioux City. She earned her bachelor's degree in elementary education and reading endorsement at Briar Cliff University. She is currently taking master's classes at the University of Northern Iowa for early childhood education.
When she is not working on awesome activities for her classroom, Jenni enjoys spending time with her husband, Cole, hanging out with her nieces and nephews, watching funny movies, and rooting on the Yankees, Cowboys, Kings, and Hawkeyes!

Justine McCrea • Kindergarten
Justine McCrea loves her job teaching Kindergarten here at Whiting! She received her Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education at the University of South Dakota. She is originally from Fort Dodge, and was not used to living in such a small town! Her hobbies include reading, bike riding, and watching Netflix. Her family still resides in Fort Dodge, but Justine lives here with her cat, Cake.
Kali Boynton • 1st Grade
Kali Boynton loves teaching 1st grade! Her favorite subjects to teach are writing, reading, and science. She received her Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education at Wayne State College. She is from Onawa, IA and currently lives in Blencoe, IA with her two labradors and husband, Cole. She enjoys photography, taking trips, and catching up on her reality shows. One day she hopes to buy her retirement home near the Tetons in Wyoming.
Kristy East • 2nd Grade
Kristy East is the Second Grade teacher at Whiting. This is her third year teaching in Whiting. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Education from Wayne State College. She received her Reading endorsement from Morningside College and is currently taking courses towards a TAG endorsement there as well.
Kristy lives north of Sloan, Iowa with her husband and three children. They are a very active family with sports, camping, and outdoor activities.
Kristy enjoys working at Whiting because of the small town atmosphere and wonderful community. The support she has received from others since working at Whiting is phenomenal. She looks forward to many more years in the district.
Laura Meyer • 3rd Grade
My name is Laura Meyer, and I am a 2008 graduate from Whiting Community School. After graduation, I attended Wayne State College where I earned a degree in Elementary Education. After getting a job as a third grade teacher here at Whiting, I got my reading endorsement through Morningside College. This is currently my fourth year teaching at Whiting.
I live in Whiting with my husband, Rob, and our two boys. I love spending time with family and friends, listening to music, and reading books.
Nick West • 4th Grade
I am a lifelong Whiting Warrior. I graduated from Whiting Community School in 2004 and then attended Briar Cliff University for 4 years where I received my degree in elementary education. I have been married to my wife Katie for 4 years and we have a son named Owen. My interests are sports, dogs, and hunting.
Melissa Eggerling • 5th Grade
I graduated from the University of Northern Iowa with degrees in Therapeutic Recreation and Elementary Education. I graduated from Whiting and have taught and coached here since 1987. I am married and have two daughters. We enjoy traveling, camping, watching sports, and spending time together.
Alice McQueen • 6th Grade
I was born in Northwest Iowa. I attended Wartburg College for my Bachelor of Arts in elementary education with a science endorsement. I got my reading and middle school endorsements through Morningside College. My first two years at Whiting I worked as a para-educator before becoming a middle school teacher. I have taught everything from social studies to art to talented & gifted while here. This is my 19th year here at Whiting, and I am currently teaching 6th Grade in the Elementary.
I have season season tickets to the Sioux City Musketeers and enjoy watching Minnesota Wild hockey and Minnesota Twins baseball. I also spend time drawing and doing crafts. I love books and have more than I'll ever be able to read, both at home and in my classroom. I am an animal lover and have been a vegetarian for over 14 years. I have a very chunky cat named Charlie.
Andrea Cain • 7-8 Gr. Language Arts & Reading
My name is Andrea Cain and I am the middle school reading and language arts teacher at Whiting. This is my 8th year here. I grew up in a small town in northwest Iowa. I graduated from Buena Vista with a Bachelor's degree in elementary education, reading endorsement, and middle school generalist. I then continued on to get my Master's degree from the University of South Dakota to become a reading specialist. I love reading, traveling, and spending time with my family especially my nieces and nephews. I also have a chocolate cockapoo named Benji.
Tricia Dieger • Family & Consumer Science
Tricia Dieger is the Family and Consumer Science teacher for Middle School Exploratory and High School Classes. She is a graduate of Maple Valley/Anthon-Oto High School, and grew up in Anthon and Danbury, Iowa. She went on to pursue a degree in Human Resource Management and minor in Business Administration from Briar Cliff University. She completed a Graduate Management Certificate Program at Briar Cliff University several years later. She then decided to pursue a career in teaching, and first attended Wayne State College to gain a Teaching Endorsement in Family and Consumer Science. She is in her second year of the Teacher Intern Program at Morningside College. She spent the past 15 years in Retail Management.
Tricia resides in Sioux City, Iowa with her husband of 14 years, Chris. They have two boys that attend Sacred Heart School in Sioux City, Derek (10), and Hayden (6). Her family enjoys camping during the summer and fall. She shares a love of cooking with her husband, and they enjoy making new and unique foods for their friends and family. Her hobbies include sewing, crafts, and watching HGTV.
Phil Hubert • 7-12 Gr. Social Sciences
Phil Hubert obtained his degree in secondary education from Wayne State University. He has been teaching social sciences and coaching athletics for over 20 years. He enjoys spending time with his wife, Lesley, his three sons, and watching Hawkeye football.
Lisa Hoebelheinrich • 9-12 Gr. History & High School Language Arts
Born and raised in Yankton, SD attended Mount Marty College and graduated in December of 2004. Lisa has been teaching at Whiting since 2005. Lisa currently lives in Sioux City with her two children Josi and George.
Lisa is also the head Speech Coach, Junior Advisor, and the Yearbook Advisor.
Morgan Boger • 7-12 Math
My name is Morgan Boger and I teach 7-12th grade Math and TAG here at Whiting. This is my first year of teaching as I recently graduated from Northwestern College with a degree in mathematics and endorsements in secondary education and coaching; I played basketball there as well. I absolutely love math and find so much joy in teaching kids!
I currently live in Mapleton with my husband, Cole. Together we enjoy spending time with our friends and family, sports, going on walks & bike rides, and going to the family farm. I am an avid scrapbooker, crafter, and junk rescuer as I am a lover of DIY.
Trevor Alfredson • 7-12 Business ~ Activities Director ~ Tech Coordinator
I am in my first year of teaching after leaving the corporate sales world for the last 8 years. I graduated from Morningside in 2007 with a degree in Business Marketing and spent the last 8 years of my life working several different sales jobs. I recently re-enrolled into Morningside's Teacher Education Program and received my license.
I live in Moville, Iowa with my wife Mary (who teaches Kindergarten in Sioux City) and my 4 sons (Carter 13, Kaleb 13, Cade 2, Kellen 2) and our two dogs (Bentley and Keystone). I enjoy golfing, coaching, going places and doing fun activities with my family, and relaxing at my house.
Amanda McGrain • High School Spanish
Amanda McGrain is the Spanish and Psychology teacher here at Whiting. Amanda is a graduate of Whiting High School and happy to be back home. Amanda graduated from Wayne State College in 2014. She enjoys teaching and anything to do with the Spanish language. Her favorite things to do are to travel, spend time with family, and learn. Her favorite saying is "Every student a teacher, and every teacher a student."
Amanda is a mother of two girls, Maisy and Elsa. She lives on a farm north of Hornick with her farmer husband, Kevin. Even though she does not live in the district she is extremely happy to have her children come to school at Whiting for the same great education and memories she had.
Lesley Hubert • High School Language Arts
Lesley Hubert was raised and educated in Whiting, Iowa. She received her Bachelor of Science in Education at the University of South Dakota. She currently teaches High School Language Arts. Her other duties include Assistant Speech Coach, Assistant Girls’ Basketball Coach, and National Honor Society Sponsor.
Lesley and her husband Phil have three sons who have graduated from Whiting Community School. Lesley enjoys cooking, being outside, and spending time with her family.
Jared Graham • K-12 Grade Physical Education
Jared is in his 8th year of teaching and he graduated from Iowa State University with a degree in Health and Human Performance. Before teaching at Whiting, Jared was the K-12 physical education teacher and activities director at the International Christian School of Lima in Lima, Perú. Jared is currently teaching K-12 physical education here at Whiting.
Jared enjoys spending time with his wife and two children and he also enjoys playing sports and hiking.
Jana Malloy • K-12 Grade Art
Mrs. Malloy has been teaching art since 2007. Originally from Sioux City, Mrs. Malloy received her undergraduate degree from Wayne State College. She also has a Masters of Curriculum and Instruction from Doane College. After beginning her teaching career in Omaha, Nebraska, Mrs. Malloy returned to her hometown and is thrilled to be back in Iowa. Go Hawks!
Mrs. Malloy is a mother to a wildly independent, free spirited daughter and the wife of a technology and golf loving husband.
When she's not teaching Art, Mrs. Malloy enjoys reading Christopher Moore novels, attending concerts, and finding new ways to be creative. Her life goals including winning a food eating competition and to illustrating a children's book.
Alicia Vande Hoef • K-12 Grade Music
Alicia Vande Hoef is currently in her fifth year of teaching at Whiting Community School. She has a K-12 Vocal and Instrumental Music Education degree from South Dakota State University. While there, she participated in a saxophone quartet, marching band, symphonic band, and jazz band. She grew up near Orange City, Iowa and attended high school at MOC-Floyd Valley. She was involved in band and choir in high school and kept pursuing music in college. She met her husband, Collin Vande Hoef, in high school and dated him throughout college and was married in 2012. He has his own lawn care and snow removal business in the area.
Alicia’s hobbies and interests include playing saxophone and piano, helping out with the children’s choir at her church, and spending time with friends and family.
Suzanne Bartels • Title I Reading & K-6th Math
This school year began my 39th year in education. I graduated from the University of Northern Iowa with a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education and a Spanish minor. I taught for many years and decided to complete my Masters of Science in PK-12 administration from Emporia State University in Kansas.
Throughout my years in education I have taught in South Dakota, Kansas and Iowa. I have taught grades K-12 in various capacities. I have been a teacher, an at-risk director, charter school co-director, and an administrator. I am currently teaching Title 1 Reading and Math K-6.
I live in Sloan in my childhood home with my husband Randy. We have 5 children, 3 grandchildren and 4 granddogs.
Heather Bryan • K-6 Gr. Special Education
My name is Heather Bryan. I am a K-6 Special Education Teacher here at Whiting. I have taught Special Education here at Whiting for 20 years. I am a graduate of Whiting High School. After high school, I attended the University of Northern Iowa where I earned my degree in elementary education and special education.
I have a daughter, Shelby, who graduated from Whiting Community School in 2014. She is currently attending the University of Iowa. During the summer, I spend my free-time gardening and I enjoy spending time outdoors.
Andrea DeRocher • 7-12 Gr. Special Education
My name is Andrea DeRocher and this is my first year as a Whiting Warrior!! I am working as the 7-12 Special Education teacher and also 6th grade Life Skills. For the previous 10 years I owned my own Salon in Sioux City. About 5 years ago I decided to go back to Buena Vista University to finish my teaching degree and I am so happy I did!! Currently I have a major in Elementary Education with a minor in history. I also have endorsements in reading, coaching and special education K-12.
Along with teaching I am coaching high school volleyball and jr. high boys/girls basketball. I have coached several different teams over the last 10 years, which include an elite 16’s team out of Sioux City called MVP and a club that I now run with my family called Kill Club. My goal this year is to get everyone involved in some sort of extra curricular activity be it band, music, speech, sports or any of the other activities Whiting has to offer. Whiting has been an awesome experience for me and I look forward to spending many more years here as a Warrior!!!
