Warriors Fall to Wolves, Tigers

January 10, 2012

The Whiting Warrior boys basketball team dropped a pair of games during the first week back from winter break.  On Tuesday night the Warriors fell 68-23 to the IKM/Manning Wolves.  The Wolves jumped out to a 22-8 lead after the first quarter and coasted to an easy victory.  Whiting struggled from the field, shooting 22% (8-36).

In the second game of the week, the Warriors started slow once again and could not recover from an 11 point halftime deficit.  Whiting, once again, struggled from the floor shooting 24%.  The Warriors also turned the ball over 19 times.  "We definitely didn't have our best week of basketball," said head coach Lee Nelson, "but our effort was pretty good.  We need to start tightening things up on both ends of the court and be more efficient."

Senior Reid Linden led the team in points and rebounds for the week with 18 and 13, including 14 and 10 at Woodbine.  Freshman Wade Martian was next in line with 16 points.  Senior Kevin Grell was second in rebounds with 12.  Linden, Grell, and classmate Nate Mikkelsen led the team with 3 assists for the week.  Mikkelsen also had 5 blocks.  Martian led the team with 3 steals.

The Warriors return to action Tuesday night on the road at Spalding Catholic.  On Friday night, Whiting will play host to West Harrison in a Western Valley conference game.  The girls' game is at 6 with the boys' to follow.
